"Ilocano spirit" brings ''Tan-ok'' to the streets

Jan 30, 2018 ...

Performers of the upcoming "Tan-ok ni Ilocano Festival of Festivals" graced the streets of Laoag City and San Nicolas in a dance parade last January 26, heralding Ilocos Norte's bicentennial year and offering a preview of their respective contingent set for the "Tan-ok" stage.

The dance parade served as a prelude to Ilocos Norte's 200th foundation celebration, which officially begins this February 2 with the 7th "Tan-ok."

According to Ilocos Norte Tourism Officer Mr. Ianree "Aian" Raquel, over 7,000 Ilocanos coming from the private and government sector participated in the event, with more than half being the Ilocano performers representing the 21 towns and two cities of Ilocos Norte to  compete in the main "Tan-ok" event.

The "Tan-ok ni Ilocano Festival of Festivals" is a province-wide dance showdown showcasing the different native festivals celebrated throughout Ilocos Norte, from festivals celebrating communal faith and Ilocano heroes to those centered on livelihood and natural resources.

"We gave a preview to everyone of what they can see on February 2. We had the festival dances for the first time brought to the streets of Laoag and the business hub in San Nicolas. We are very happy about the outcome," Raquel said.

He also expressed his excitement for the upcoming "showdown" of festivals, saying, "All our groups are performing and preparing really well. It is very obvious that Ilocano performers have a different character when they're performing. We are very meek, humble, not really outspoken and outgoing since there's a level of shyness in every Ilocano, but once we perform, there's a certain truth that you can feel.

"There's this level of dedication that can never be compared to other regions. The dedication and the spirit of Ilocano performers is really something."

Meanwhile, Raquel extended his thanks to the different agencies who contributed to the success of the parade, noting the efforts of the Ilocos Norte Provincial Police Office for ensuring the safety of participants and spectators all the way from the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena in Laoag until Robinsons Place Ilocos in San Nicolas.
